2020 Vision

We've all been through it, new year new me, resolutions, blah blah and then within a month or so our dreams of losing weight, getting fit or saving have all demonised.

In 2019 I set off on the same journey though this time I found something that worked for me.

See I had tried and failed, particularly in 2018, to get on with achieving what I wanted to do. When 2019 rolled around I slightly changed what sort of goals I wanted to set myself, they became more behavioural goals that would hopefully give me an outcome I would desire. This approach was extremely successful when it came to improving my diet, I'd set myself rules around what I could and couldn't eat knowing that if I followed them strictly the result would be a healthier me, and I'd probably drop some unnecessary weight at the same time.

So for 2020 I am going to take the same approach, find some aspects of my life that I can improve on and find the best ways to alter them.

My key areas of action are:

  1. Reduce my use of electricity and water by 10%

  2. Create and capture moments

  3. Reduce my wastage, in particular coffee cups and shopping bags

  4. Improve my half marathon PB

1. Water and electricity: Okay so this seems like a pretty simple one, in fact I hope to be able to do significantly more than 10% but I had to set a bench mark. This goal is driven by my desire to contribute more to reducing our impact on the environment. I've already change my electricity to monthly bills and daily reporting with a smart meter. Climate change in my view sits with all of us not just governments and businesses, so I have to pull my weight if I expect others to pull theirs.

2. Create and capture moments: WTF I hear you ask. Everyone enjoys looking back on their fondest of memories, I know I do, so my plan this year is to consciously come up with things that we can do as a family to create memories, especially for our kids and be able to capture them, because I am terrible at taking photos and documenting the things we do. We had done a particularly good job of this in late 2016 and early 2017 with lots of camping and road trips but other things took priority, so have to get back to it.

3. Reduce my wastage: This one kind of ties in with the first one, I have a strong focus to try and improve the impact that I have on the planet.

As part of an assignment I did at Uni I looked at the impact that PET bottles have in the environment, in particular water bottles. My commitment is to get back into not purchasing PET bottles and using my reusable but I am wanting to extend that to coffee cups which are an item I consume too many of. We also have too much packaging on the groceries that we purchase so it would be great to be able to reduce the amount of packaging that we throw out.

On top of the above I still want to continue my previous actions from last year which was maintaining a healthy diet, continuing my triathlons and fitness and staying in control of my fitness.

I'm optimistic for this year, I feel positive about having a focus they is more about my impact to others rather than achievements for myself.

Here's to a great 2020.
